A mini dental implant is identical to the larger and more commonly used dental implants, but they are much smaller in size. They are often used for patients who have shallow jawbones or for placing multiple implants on a lower jaw. These mini implants are just as durable and long-lasting as traditional implants. They are made of titanium and are placed in a similar manner as the original kind.
Mini implants may be needed if you have a smaller jaw or not as much valuable bone density. They can be placed on a lower jaw where there isn't as much bone to work with when it comes to a traditional dental implant. These mini implants work similarly to the larger ones, as they can hold a crown, denture or fixed bridge in place. They can replace one or more missing teeth within the mouth.
To determine if you may need a mini dental implant, we will perform an exam as well as take x-rays. The x-rays help us to identify the size and shape of your jawbone and whether or not you'd benefit more from mini implants. Most patients who need an implant can safely have the procedure done. Many patients find that mini implants heal quicker because of less space needed to insert them into the jawbone.
The procedure begins by providing you with sedation or anesthetic of your choice. We then make an incision through the gums and create a tunnel-like hole in the jawbone. Because we're placing a mini implant, very little drilling of the jaw is necessary in order to place the restoration. The mini implant is then placed and you'll wait several months for it to heal and fuse naturally with the bone. Once healed, a crown, fixed bridge or overdenture can be made to fit over the brand new mini implants. The entire procedure is done safely and conveniently in our office.
