May 25, 2023

Jaw pain should be taken seriously, and if you have been in an accident, or suffered trauma to your jaw it may be time to call your dentist. Jaw pain is the most common sign of an issue, and knowing when to call your dentist is important. If you think you have a broken jaw, this is considered a dental emergency, and you should make an appointment right away. Depending on the severity we may encourage you to visit the hospital.

SYMPTOMS YOU MAY HAVE A BROKEN JAW

  • Bruising under your tongue
  • An injury to your ear canal
  • Your lip or chin feels numb
  • Your jaw is displaced
  • Swelling
  • Jaw will not open correctly
  • Your teeth are not in alignment
  • Problems speaking or chewing food
  • Extreme pain
  • Bleeding that will not subside

When you call our office we may ask you a series of questions to determine the best treatment plan. If you have experienced trauma, treatment for a broken jaw should be taken care of at a hospital. Other more serious symptoms may occur due to jaw trauma, and the hospital can provide the very best care. If you notice you have breathing issues please do not wait and call 911 immediately.

When you visit the hospital for a broken jaw x-rays will be taken and you will be given a physical exam. Depending on the severity jaw surgery may be recommended. Your jaw stability will be tested and blood work will be taken.

WHAT CAN I DO AT HOME BEFORE I AM SEEN?
