Dentures and Partials
What are Dentures and Partials?
A complete or full denture is used to replace an entire arch of teeth that are missing. A partial denture clips onto your existing teeth and replaces just the teeth that you’re lacking. Both types of dentures are made to look and feel natural. They can last for up to seven years before complete replacement is needed.
Why are Dentures and Partials needed?
Dentures of all kinds offer both cosmetic and restorative benefits. Not only do they enhance and perfect your smile, but they make eating, chewing and talking so much easier. When you’re missing most or all of your teeth, your face may even appear to look sunken-in. Dentures help to fill in the face so that you look youthful and healthy.
What makes you a candidate for Dentures and Partials?
We can perform a quick examination to identify the need for a full or partial denture. If many of your teeth are still healthy and firmly in place, a partial denture is best suited to you. However, if you have severely advanced gum disease and many of your existing teeth are decayed, loose or damaged, we may suggest removing them to place a full denture. We aim to preserve healthy teeth within the mouth as much as possible, so partial dentures are often a better option for preventing unnecessary extractions.
What happens during the procedure for Dentures and Partials?
If teeth are to be extracted, this is done prior to the denture being made. Detailed impressions are taken of both the gums and teeth to make your new dental prosthesis. You will come in for a fitting of the new denture, where we will make adjustments to the fit and bite of it. It’s common to need several adjustments to the denture before the fit is comfortable for you. It is important that you remove the denture nightly to keep it clean and odor-free. You may need to replace the denture after about seven years or when it shows signs of wear.
