Dental Exams & Cleanings
What are Dental Exams & Cleanings?
Both exams and cleanings are important parts of keeping your smile looking its best. Exams allow us to check for problems before they become worse and cleanings are done to prevent both tooth decay and gum disease. Combined, cleanings and exams are necessary for every member of your family. You should have a cleaning and an exam done once every six months.
Why are Dental Exams & Cleanings needed?
The reason a dental exam is needed is because it gives us a clear view of your oral and dental health. We check for things like cavities, cracks, breaks, loose restorations and oral cancer during the exam. Cleanings are performed by licensed and registered hygienists who remove stains and tartar from your teeth. Tartar, which is hardened plaque, is nearly impossible to remove safely on your own, and it can contribute to both gum disease as well as tooth decay.
Who is a candidate for Dental Exams & Cleanings?
Every member of your family is a good candidate for a cleaning and exam. In fact, you should be coming in for these appointments twice a year at six-month intervals. It’s never too late to take control of your oral health. Regardless of how long it’s been since your last appointment, we offer preventative care in a nonjudgmental manner.
What happens during Dental Exams & Cleanings?
The appointment will begin with a cleaning that is performed by our trained dental hygienist. The hygienist uses special tools to clear away tartar, plaque and hard-to-remove stains. The teeth are flossed and polished to a high shine. Your gums are checked for signs of pocketing, which could indicate gingivitis or gum disease. Once the cleaning is finished, our doctor comes in to perform the exam. The exam takes just minutes and is critical when it comes to creating a personalized dental treatment plan. You will then be pre-scheduled for your next preventative care appointment and can leave the office feeling confident in a clean, fresh and healthy smile.
